Question: I'm trying to help my nephew with his math homework and it's been a while since I've been in school -I can come up with the answers, but he has to show his work. It's dividing simple fractions- ie 3 1/2 divided by 5/8=? It needs to be reduced to the lowest common denomonater and written as a whole or mixed number. He has a hard time with math anyway, so any help is greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of a way to get an 11 year old excited about math / school- I would love to hear it. He's ADHD /ODD and is way smarter than he lets on. Thank you!

If you divide a fraction by another, invert it and multiply. 3 1/2 divided by 5/8 is the same thing as 3 1/2 times 8/5. 7/2 * 8/5 = 56/10 = 5 6/10 = 5 3/5.

multiply top and bottom fractions 1) 4/9 * 3/7 = (4*3) / (9*7) = 12/63 then reduce via a common denominator (divide by 3) = 4/21 2) 2/3 * 3/7 = (2*3) / (3*7) = 6/21 common denominator 3 =2/7 3) 3/5 * 3/7 = (3*3) / (5*7) = 9/35 4) 1/2 * 3/7 = (1*3) / (2*7) = 3/14

The reciprocal means that you flip the fraction over. For instance, the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2. So to divide (4/5)/(1/3) You multiply the top by the reciprocal of the bottom 4/5 * 3/1 = 12/5

if 3 1/2 is divided by 5/8, therefore it'll become 3 1/2 multiply by 8/5 or 7/2 multiply by 8/5 the final answer is 28/5

you take the reciprocal of the second fraction. a reciprocal is the numbers fliped so the reciprocal of 12/3 is 3/12. so if you had a problem that was 1/2 divided by 3 (same thing as 3/1) then to change it to multiplication then you take the reciprocal of 3 which would be 1/3 and muliply the first fraction and the reciprocal so it wouls be 1/2 *1/3= 1/6. when you muliply fractions, you multiply the numerators (top number) together to get you numerator, then you multiply your demoniators (bottom number) togwether to get you demonator. 1. 1/12 2. 21/20 3. 1/16 4.8/9 (just ignore the negative until you get you answer and just put it infront of you aswer because it wil be negative no matter what.) im sorry but i cannot give you the answers or that would be cheating but try these out! i hope i helped!!
