Question: To what extent did economic and social differences cause the United States Civil War? How do i turn that into a thesis statement? OK i have this but how can i make this stronger and shorter? Economic and social differences caused the civil war by dividing the north and south into sectional divisions because of the biggest issue of slavery.

I just learned about this in school: The thesis statement basicly sums up the wholes essay. It's where you right what each main topic of each paragraph in one sentence. It sums up the entire paper. The thesis MUST be at the end of your opening paragraph and then you restate it in your conclusion paragraph. I usually write my essay and then throw in the thesis at the end of my first paragraph when i know what it is all about and what it actually says. Hope this helps :)

In a short essay, use a single, short paragraph to communicate exactly what you intend to write about, including the title of the text you are writing about, the author's name, and your thesis statement. Often, you can do this in a single sentence: "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", by Gordon Lightfoot, follows the conventions of the traditional ballad. [16 words] If you wish, you can add more: Gordon Lightfoot's tragic song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is based on a real tragedy, the sinking of a bulk carrier cargo ship in a gale on Lake Superior in November 1975, with the loss of 29 men. Considered as a poem, the lyrics follow the conventions of the traditional ballad. [52 words] You rarely need to write more than this, but you do need to decide what your readers needs to know to understand your thesis statement, and what feels right for your personal style. A thesis statement is a single declarative sentence (that is, not a question) that clearly indicates the content and direction of the essay. In both examples above, the thesis is that “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot follows the conventions of the traditional ballad. In the first example, the statement of the thesis stands alone; in the second example, it is briefly introduced. In the second example, the thesis statement—Considered as a poem....—does not require the author and title, as these are already mentioned in the introduction. this is long but hopefully it helps. I'm doing english 12 and this was sent to me to help me with my assignment.

"Economic and social differences contributed significantly to the U.S. Civil War." Then support that statement.

I'm not sure on how, but you know what your main point is( your main focus). That is your thesis, because it is your central idea. what is the answer to that question. there you will find your thesis.
