December 7 , 1941 " a day that will live in infamy . Let me see if I can help you being a vet , having been there and seen the battlefield, and having been a history teacher for 21 years . I will humbly try to answer the questions to your satisfaction .
On the morning of Dec. 7 , 1941 Pearl Harbor had almost the entire eastern fleet in port . It was a lazy day and no one expected a thing . The US Navy spotted the Japanese bombers on radar when they were 50 - 100 miles out and since radar was so new the Officer on duty told them it had to be a flock of birds so turn it off . that flock of birds turned out to be squadrons of Japanese bombers that were loaded to the gills to attack our airbase and our port . While the planes attacked from the air , there were allso two small submarines that got inside the harbor and were torpedoing boats to keep them from getting out . we were caught completely unprepared and few airplanes made it off the ground and only one if any ships made it out . the attack crippled the American fleet .
Casualties were many , women , children , and servicemen . The base itself was a total disaster with little left to protect itself with .
The battle was considered a huge success to the Japanese at first , but it turned out to be the turning point in WWII . When the Emperor of Japan heard of the success of the island raid , he just hung his head and said " We have awakened a sleeping giant" He said that because at the time the US was not involved with the war , but the emperor knew that now we would be and in a big way. So initially it was a success to keep America down for awhile , but in the end it was a huge failure because when the US became involved in the war . It only took two more years to end the war .
Pretty much have already told you , their plan , how they pulled it off , the only thing that was really ironic is just recently before the attack the US had sent Japan a large large supply of scrap metal which they delivered back to us in the form of bombs .
The battle was cause because the Japanese forces felt if they could do major damage to the American forces , it would keep them out of the war completely so they started hatching a plan to do just that and when they found out about most of the fleet being in one place , they began to put their plan into place . In fact the US intercepted a message about the attack about a year before it happened but blew it off , because they figured no one had enough courage to attack us .
