I have the same thing as you, i hate my legs, especially my thighs. What i do is i do squats, biking(summer), and roller blading, in a sort of routine. I do squats every morning when i wake up, and before i go to bed, along with sit ups or crunches. I roller blade every day or every other, depending on homework or how busy i am. & i bikeride all summer long, as well as swimming. I don't have full results yet, but my legs have improved, and my body is more muscular now. You could also do running, long or short distances, or even jogging. I just choose not to do that, because i'm asthmatic and i may black out again :D Just be super patient, and eventually, you'll have great legs that you want to show off to the world, i`m with ya :)

The burning might be diabetic neuropathy, which is common in diabetes. The weight loss could be from diabetes (especially type 1) or the possible AIDS. Since you care enough about your friend enough to ask here, get him to a doctor who can make a proper diagnosis, and prescribe the correct medicine. It's imperative he be seen as soon as possible. If you have no insurance then you need to get on a government-assisted plan. Or get a different job! You're not going to be able to live this way. Insulin is too expensive now, and you can't back off on it or you will get complications very early. Please look into this right away. In the meantime, get your insulin at Wal-Mart. At least you can get Regular insulin for something like $18. Your ketones are probably running high and you're heading for diabetic ketoacidosis.
