Question: I'm pursuing a business managment major in a university. I know alot of algebra to geometry to algebra II. I have not taken pre-calculus yet and I fear that its a big problem. So I would like to ask any graduates or students maybe that what am I in for in a business major. (In case you see this mom, I'm using your email to ask this question! -Dixie)

For my business management bachelors, I had to take college algebra, pre-calculus, business calculus (modified to be more about finance type stuff than trigonometry), and two stats classes. Naturally, I also had to take accounting and finance classes, which do involve math, and some of that is derived from your college math classes, so they typically are a prerequisite. If you're ok in math now, you'll be fine. I struggle with math, so those were my hardest classes, but I got through them, and so will you. Don't let the fear of math classes affect your life plan! My buddy changed from a business major to a poli-sci major because poli-sci didn't have math requirements. Now that we're both graduating, he's still struggling to find a job and I'm already set with a great job after I graduate thanks to being more marketable with my business degree.

I really think you should double major in business and psychology or business and English. I Law firms are a business, so you will be a good asset to the law firm with a degree in Business administration. You could also work for a major corporation as their lawyer, if you understand the law and business, you will be a great asset to a business corporation. I do agree you should try to specialize in something within business. A degree in psychology is helpful because it will help you read people like clients and it will help you when you are formulating argument to state your case to the jury, judge or who ever else. You will be using what you learn in psychology to your advantage. English is also good but in college, you will have ample of opportunity to develop your writing especially if you study law. You will have so many papers to write in law school or as a psychology major. Good luck with your career path ok. ss

You dont need an extreme amount of math in business administration, its generally simple math. The BBA should not affect your chances of going into law school AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A HIGH GPA; it doesnt matter which subject but a high GPA is important, now if you are applying with a 3.0 GPA in Engineering compared to someone with 3.8 in Philosophy, then u might have preference or an equal chance because engineering is much harder than philosophy, and universities know that. Know what i mean? BUT, a BBA is a very good degree which will not only get you jobs easier but also better paying jobs in general.

Some knowledge of calculus is helpful for advanced business concepts, particularly in finance. However, for most things (including basic statistics, which you'll need at some point), you just need to know arithmetic.

Since you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you'll start a web based business or one with a store front. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE. The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a T-shirt business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them. You'll need to register the business with your state controller's office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan. Try this link : http://www.ychange.com/small-business-consulting-articles.html and read some of the articles especially the ones about a business plan and starting a business. Good Luck
