Question: I am almost 20 years old, and i still live with my parents. I go to a community college and work part time. Even though i am in school, i feel like a no good piece of crap everyday. I wanna go out on my own by joining the military or something, but i cant. I have an anxiety issue i had dealing with since i was 15. I have anxiety's about concentrating on my thoughts to much, such as breathing (I know it sounds dumb but it is serious for me). I always cant seem to just let myself breathe on my own. I end up thinking when to inhale and exhale and freak out. I ended up getting medication for it, and the problems was fixed for a long time. Until about 3 months ago when my anxiety started to come back again. The only time i feel safe and relaxed is when i am at home near family. Even to myself, this issue sounds ridiculous, but i just don't know what to do. I just feel like giving up on life often. I cant look forward to anything, i cant even concentrate on my studys, and i really want to get my college degree. What can i do about this? Or am i just going to suffer this until i die?

Have you told your physician about the changes? It does not sound ridiculous to me, it sounds like you have a genuine problem, and need to let your physician know about it. I, too, have suffered with similar problems, including depression and anxiety attacks. These, and similar conditions, can seriously interfere with your life, and it sounds to me like they are doing so in your case. There is hope, and there is help. Can you talk to your parents about this? If you are living at home (and a lot of folks your age do), perhaps you can at least tell them that you need to see the doctor again. Did anything change in your life 3 or 4 months ago? If so, maybe it could be a clue as to what is changing your feelings. At any rate, tell your doctor! And don't wait!

This being the case, the lives of animals and humans are not fungible. Most people place human life on a level above that of most animals, but most people will also be far more distressed at the loss of a family pet than at the loss of hundreds of people in an earthquake half-way across the world. So, when you ask to compare the life of an animal to that of a human, I would have to ask, "Which animal?" and "Which human?" The loss of life is typically said to be a shame, and many argue that all life has value. Intellectually, this may even be the case, but on an emotional level, we are largely unaffected by the numerous deaths that occur in the world every day, unless of course one of those deaths happens to affect that small percentage of the population that we happen to know. So, if I had to answer the question posed to you, I would say that I value the life of the animal or human to whom I had the closest bond. Good luck with your essay.

I have no way to be sure what you problem is. It sounds like separation anxiety, that might be wrong. Try getting in shape. Why don't you make up your mind to go to the gym for an hour a day three days a week. Do some strength training. This will give you self esteem and might even help with real heath issues. You should talk to a doctor if you have not done that. Never give up hope, keep trying to help others when you can. This is good for the soul and gets one outside of your self. Find a hobby, learn an instrument. Go hiking. live a little! I hope you struggle on with positive determination. Life is too good to quit!

I think its hard for you to enjoy your life or take success. It seems overwhelming. It seems like you really feel worthless and you need help building your self esteem. There is no solution except to start focusing on your problems and working on yourself. You are worth it. You, just like everyone else, deserves to have a good, happy life. Try going to therapy as a way to help you focus on yourself. Good luck!
