What should a high school student wanting to go into international business think about? Topic: What should a high school student wanting to go into international business think about?

Question: So, I'm pretty much in love with the idea of having my occupation be in business. I took a college level business course at my high school (as a sophomore) and I'm planning on joining our schools FBLA and taking the Global Business test. I've also been trying to take the International Business class at school... but either not enough students signed up and the teacher just got let go due to budget cuts. What should I think about. Should I take as many business courses as I can? Where should I go to college? What should I major and minor in? What the heck does it mean to get an MBA, and should I have that? What are some of the jobs associated with International Business. I'm taking Chinese in school, should I take classes in college to become fluent? UGH! So many questions!! Please and thank you

High school business classes are seldom college prep classes. Be sure that any more that you take are also college level. You will need to go to college and major in business and minor in a different language than you learned in high school, in addition to taking enough Chinese classes to become fluent. Go to the best business school you can. For international business, the US News survey suggest U of South Carolina-Columbia (Moore), New York University (Stern), U of Pennsylvania (Wharton) (in Philadelphia), U of Michigan--Ann Arbor, and U of Southern California (Marshall). Other top programs include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan) and U of California--Berkeley (Haas). However, if you are interested in the U of South Carolina and possibly some others of these universities, make sure that enough Chinese is offered to fill your need. Try to work for a company which does mainly international business. An MBA is a master's degree in business administration. It is virtually essential to earn one to advance in the business field. Usually MBA students work in business for about three years after earning their bachelor's degree before they return to school to earn the MBA. A full-time MBA program takes two years. It is usually taken at different university than the one where the bachelor's degree was earned.

You can officially apply in the fall/when you go back to school your senior year. You need letters of recommendation, your official transcript from guidance counselors, etc. Over the summer you can prepare by writing your college essays, decide which schools you are applying to and research the requirements, fill out your senior brag sheet and start filling out your common app.

Realize that these letters are just advertisement for the colleges. Phone calls, letters, emails are advertisements. Colleges just getting their names out there. They more students who apply to their school they better it is for them. My daughter started getting these end of sophomore year. By senior year our mailbox had them everyday. They mean nothing. You do not have any better chance of getting into those school than student who did not receive a letter. They have NOTHING do to with getting accepted. Applications for Fall 2014 will start to open up late this August. Just go on any college's web site to see if applications are open for the schools you want to apply to. You can read requirements to apply on each school's web site. Most require a SAT or ACT score, your official HS transcripts, two letters of recommendation from 2 core subject teachers, and a college essay along with the application being filled out.

Wanting to be in "International Business" is like you saying you want to be rich. Graduates don't get hired as "international businessmen". They get hired to work for a company based on their merits, and maybe they will get international assignments in a few years. If you like Business, then just get a 4yr degree in Business.

Oz Originally Answered: Best advice to house a 16-17 year old high school student in Japan?
It is possible to spend your senior year of high school in Japan on a study abroad program. You could conceivably live on your budget. You will also have to pay for the study abroad program, and it will cost you at least $15,000. Your high school diploma will be coming from the American high school you're attending now, and not from the Japanese high school that you will be attending. More importantly, there is no realistic prospect that you can get into a Japanese college, so as soon as you are done with high school, your visa will expire, and you will have to return to the US. This probably isn't what you were hoping for, so it really is much better to finish high school first and then to consider college in Japan or a study abroad program in Japan at the college level.
